Benefits of Backlinks

August 17th, 2010 No comments

Backlinks to your website/blog is essential for good SEO. And as we know – good SEO means a top Google search engine position. So backlinks are important – but how do you get backlinks?

Backlinks

Backlinking is basically placing your URL on a site so that people can click through on this link and be taken to your website.

So where can you put your link? Backlinking isn’t like graffiti – you can just trawl the net and then place your URL like a tag everywhere. You need to be decisive about where you put your link to ensure optimum success.

There are many ways that you can create backlinks – and we will look at three here:

Forums
Web 2.0 pages
Blogs

Forum
All  you need to do here is find a forum that is relevant to the topic of your website/blog. Join, read through posts and then add comments where appropriate. When you leave a comment, ensure you have set up your signature and that your URL is in your signature. This way, each time you make a post, your URL is posted – thus backlinking to your website/blog!
Ensure that your posts are relevant, helpful and add something to the forum. One word answers and pointless questions will not show you in a good light, and people will not click through on your link.

Web 2.0 pages
These are pages such as Squidoo or Hub pages. These are like a cross between a website and a blog. Search through the Squidoo and Hub page websites for pages that are relevant to you website/blog topic area. Some of the pages may have room for comments. Leave comments as appropriate, and always remember to leave your link!
When making comments, ensure that you are writing something positive. If you write negative comments about someone’s page, they are unlikely to approve your comment and your efforts will be wasted.

Blog
This is similar to Web 2.0 pages – simply search for blogs that are relevant to your website/blog area, read through the posts, and then make comments as appropriate, remembering to add your link. Backlinks done!
As with Web 2.0 pages, make sure that you write appropriate and positive comments. Negative and useless comments will not be approved by the blog writer!

Backlinking is easy if you know how to do it. Make the effort to backlink correctly, and the link will payout well into the future!

Submit your URL Now!

June 26th, 2010 1 comment

Online success is not accidental. Any successful Internet Entrepreneur can tell you. When creating a presence online, it’s essential to use all the tools and techniques available to you.
One of these  techniques is URL submission to search engines.

Search engines drive and directories drive website ranking, so ignore this technique at your peril!

URL

Submitting your URL to search engines is simply that. However you need to go into a bit of detail about your website in order to list. You will need to list the URL, and then provide a description of the website. Some directories require even more information than this, some less. So it is a time consuming technique, however greatly worth it.
There are hundreds of engines and directories out there. If you submit to all, you can get many backlinks back from them. Each one of these backlinks contributes to your pages popularity and ranking. Good popularity and ranking means more hits to your website, and therefore greater online success!

When starting out submitting your URL, aim for the most popular and reputable directories. This will boost your rankings straight away. As you list more and more, go down the list to the least popular. Every directory counts, so don’t ignore some for others, just tailor your submission to the most popular first.

URL submission is an excellent way to boost your ranking, however it should not be the lone technique you use. It should be paired with your whole SEO strategy.
URL submission also goes hand in hand with backlinking. You should aim to backlink as often as you submit your URL. You can backlink through blog/forum/web 2.0 commenting, article submission and general URL adverts.

Make URL submission a target in your SEO strategy. The rewards will be great with targeted traffic to your website.

Backlinking and You

June 22nd, 2010 No comments

In order to complete all facets of SEO, you must consider backlinking. Backlinking will help you to achieve top level Google ranking – but how?
We will show you some easy ways to get backlinks for yourself.

Firstly – what is backlinking? Backlinking is when you leave a comment on a blog or webpage and leave your URL with your comment. People who read the comment may then click on your URL link, thus linking back to your website/blog.

Backlinking

The main place that you can leave comments and your link are blogs, forums and web 2.0 pages.
Now having said that – you must ensure that the places that you are leaving comments and your link must be relevant to your website. You can’t leave comments on someone’s blog about knitting and link back to a heavy metal website. Find blogs, forums and web 2.0 pages that are relevant to your industry. Backlinking does require some thinking!

When making comments, commonsense rules here. Follow these simple tips:

  • Comment in blog/forum/web 2.0 that is relevant to your site
  • Make a comment about the content of that actual blog/forum post/web 2.0 page
  • Make a good, genuine, helpful comment. Keep in mind that most people still approve all comments on their pages so if it isn’t useful, it’s unlikely to be approved.

When adding your comments to forum posts you may need to register as a member in order to comment and leave your URL in your signature. This is o.k. as you want to do this as an ongoing measure anyway. Not only that, being part of an industry forum is a great way to get real time info!

Web 2.0 pages (Squidoo and Hub pages) may not allow you to specifically backlink, however you can leave your YRL within your comment. As long as the comment is helpful and informative, people will click on your link.

Take the opportunity backlinking wherever you can - after all, it is advertising for your site!

What Domain Name is right for you?

June 18th, 2010 No comments

When deciding on what domain name to use, you need to be confident in your choice – this domain will represent you!

First of all, you need to work out where your domain will be based – are you going to be using the worldwide .com or the local .com.au?

If you have a global market then you would chose a “.com” or a “.net” where as if you customers were only based in Australia then you would choose a “.com.au”

Domain Name

The reason why you would do this is because Google is all about relevancy, so this is just another factor they use when ranking site.
So if  someone in Australia put in a search term for Kitchen and there were two competing sites out there. One site was located here in Australia and it’s domain was www.kitchen.com.au and the other company had www.kitchen.com, all things being equal with SEO then the site that would be ranked 1st would be the “.com.au” as Google knows where the person who is searching for a ‘kitchen’ is located, therfore wanting to give them a more relevant kitchen site. Simple!

The only difference is that .com’s have been around much longer than .net so .com is in the top of people’s minds. If a “.com” is available over a “.net” then it’s best to choose a “.com”.
Better still, if your domain name is available, why not buy both, and have the “.net” permanently redirected to the “.com”. Google won’t rank a “.com” over a “.net” based of the extension alon, it’s got more to do with the domain name and other SEO factors.

Choosing a domain name all comes down to keyword research. What specific keyword are you targeting for your business. The domain name is part of the SEO equation so its best to choose a domain name that is related to your industry. It’s best to get your keyword as your domain name.

Promoting Your Website Through Live Feed And RSS

April 29th, 2010 1 comment

Online businesses require as much exposure as possible. They need to be promoted and advertised through every possible tool. From SEO to backlinking, everything focuses on generating high amounts of traffic.
Live feed and RSS is also one of those powerful methods that allow visitors to follow you.

RSS
RSS feed or live feed is an XML based tool that allows people to get your recent updates. They can receive these updates even in their mailboxes. Whenever you publish a new article or put new content on your site, the update is sent to the subscribers. The advantage to the subscribers is that they receive fresh content regularly without revisiting the site again and again to check if there is something new. And the RSS feed owner is benefited by getting loads of valuable links that contribute to the overall ranking of the site.
With live feed and RSS, there are far more chances of your content being read frequently by your target audience. Apart from direct subscribers, there are also chances of finding many more visitors leading to high amounts of traffic.
There are a number of websites that provide interesting headlines via RSS feeds of popular websites to give their readers the latest and more interesting content. You can take your RSS feeds to such sites, so the subscribers, if they find them interesting, will visit your site.
Your loyal readers will be happy to receive continuous updates about any new product or service being added to your site. They like to keep a constant eye on new developments. Immediate knowledge helps them in responding on time.
To start your own live feed, your website must be database driven. You should use a content management system to perform all the updates.
There is a possibility that you can offer more than one live feed and RSS to your readers about different content. The feeds are integrated into the site and can also be connected to RSS directories.
Live feeds are a great way to increase website traffic and to reach out to a wider audience. If used properly, they can play a major role in increasing conversion rates and making repeat sales from your target audience.

Using Google Images For Better SEO

April 26th, 2010 1 comment

Labeling and tagging of images has proved quite fruitful for many websites. Thanks to Google images, the websites have witnessed a substantial increase in their daily search engine traffic. As a matter of fact, Google images is the largest untapped reserve of SEO.

Google Images

It requires a lot of patience and hard work to optimize images for Google image search but it is a very effective tool for search engine marketing strategy and should be adopted by all serious internet marketers.
The major benefits include more traffic to your site and reinforcing the theme of your web page.
Unlike website submission, there is no way that you can submit images to the image search. You need to abide by certain guidelines in order to be picked up by image bots.
These image bots use a number of factors to pick up an image:

  • descriptive name of the image
  • optimization on page
  • storage, useful backlinks
  • the relevance of the content on website
  • page rank

All these factors are used as inputs for Google’s algorithm to decide on taking up an image or not.

What are some of the ways you can take advantage of Google images:

  • Your image should have the required keyword in the title, header and all the meta tags.
  • The relevant keywords should also be placed in the text that is closer or surrounding the image. It helps bots to rank the page higher.
  • Make sure that you provide the correct description and keywords in the alt tags. These tags work when the picture cannot be displayed.
  • The images used on your site should be high resolution to allow better visual experience.
  • Using Image labeller by Google also works well as it provides better results with Google images search.

It may sound like a huge task to provide height, width, alt tag, meta tag and header for every image, but doing so goes a long way in developing strong inbound traffic to your website.  This will not only improve the rankings of your site but will also make it visually more appealing and interesting.

Backlinking: What is it?

April 20th, 2010 No comments

The world of SEO is primarily governed by page rank. Incoming links to a website, also known as backlinking, plays a very important role in it. In fact, the page rank is highly dependent on the quantity and quality of backlinks.

Before getting into the importance and other details, you must know what backlinking is. Backlinks are basically the links that direct towards your website. The quality of backlinks i.e. the sites that contain your link add a lot of volume to the online presence of your website. More than 90% of the SEO efforts these days are focussed on quality of the links only.

Backlinking

Importance
The importance of backlinking can be explained through following reasons:

•    The quality of your backlinks attracts the search engines to find your site easily. If an already popular site contains the inbound link to your site, it’s easy for the search engines to trace you and rank you.
•    The ranking algorithm used by search engines uses backlinking as a criterion. If two sites are similar in the kind of content and styling, the ranking decision is made on the number of quality inbound links a particular site has.
•    Link popularity and the link anchor text are also very important deciding factors for ranking a site by all the major search engines like Yahoo and Google. Anchor text is actually the labelling of the hyperlink and the bots or the spiders examine this text to determine its relevance with respect to the content on the page.
•    Backlinks actually act as direction pointers to attract visitors. There are millions of sites on the internet and to gain the attention of a visitor, you need to keep pointers at the most frequented places, in this case, most frequented websites.

The quality of backlinking directly impacts the web traffic and the web presence of your site. So it requires you to put in a good amount of effort in this area to improve your rankings.

Traffic Act

February 16th, 2010 No comments

Hi my name is Jen and I run an internet and search marketing company called Traffic Act.

I am a big fan of the Australian outdoors and the bush and I am passionate about internet marketing, especially search. They are totally unrelated but not mutually exclusive :)

Have your heard of search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and would you like to do some of it yourself? An SEO workshop is what you need!

Search Marketing refers to the various strategies you can adopt to increase your website’s visibility on a search engine, e.g. Google or Yahoo.
Your goal is always to get “better” traffic to your website. You don’t want window shoppers, right? You want people that are actually looking for you.
Thing is … you may need to help them a little, to make sure they find you (instead of the competition)

You can try to drive traffic instantly by buying advertising space on Google Adwords. You would pay each time someone clicks on your ad. Hence the term “pay per click” advertising or PPC.  PPC is one of the components of your search marketing strategy.

The other component is “free traffic” referring to the fact you do not pay for the clicks. Free clicks occur in the “organic” or “natural” search results section of a Google page. The art of increasing your visibility in the organic search results is called “Search Engine Optimisation” or SEO.

SEO is a long term strategy as well as a time consuming project. Many companies outsource their SEO because they need to work on their business instead of doing only SEO. However, you may not yet have the luxury to pay someone else to do this for you, but you also do not quite know if…. and if so, how… you can do some of this yourself.

SEO is not an afterthought to your website. It should be the starting point. SEO will help you set up the right structure for your website so that your site will be ready for Google when you are.

Importance of Keywords – The Key to Search Engine Optimization Success

January 4th, 2010 No comments

Importance of Keywords:
Keywords are possibly the most important aspect of your SEO efforts. While the success and popularity of your website will depend on other factors in the design of your website too, such as images, video and flash content, all these factors come into play once your site actually attracts traffic. This in turn is not possible until you make it possible for internet surfers to find your site. Search engines, when deciding which search results to display, will analyse only text. Therefore it is the words that you use on your webpages, and the places in which you use them, that are the most important aspects of your website design.

Selecting the Right Keywords:
Given the immense importance of keywords, the selection of the right keywords is the most crucial aspect of designing a website. Once you manage to select the right keywords that will match the search queries of most internet users, only then comes the problem of inserting them into the right places. Here are a few tips on selecting the right keywords:
•    Avoid single words like the plague: Most of us as users never go for single words when searching for something in a search engine. It is illogical to expect other users to do this. Go for multi word phrases for the best chances of matching users’ search strings. Also, single word terms are far too broad in meaning and will give you poor quality traffic – not the target market you want to aim at.
•    Avoid very competitive phrases: Competitive phrases are phrases that are commonly used by many websites as keywords. Using very competitive keywords will reduce your chances of being the one site among hundreds that will land on the first page.
•    Do not use unique or technical phrases: Users will usually type everyday language into search engines. Use such terms as your keywords and phrases, instead of going for very unique sounding terms that will be typed by very few people and hence give you very low traffic.
•    Select short phrases that describe exactly what you are offering: Making sure that your keywords describe your product/service exactly is very important, because only then will you get the highest quality, targeted traffic on your website. This is one way to sift out low quality traffic.

Where to Insert Keywords:
SEO using keywords is not simply about the number of keywords inserted; it is more about putting the right words in strategic places. Keywords should be inserted mostly in the following places:
•    All headings
•    Page titles
•    First paragraph
•    The URL (and especially the domain name)
•    Bolded and italicized portions of text
Finally, just remember this: it is important to ensure that your content is keyword rich, but do not get carried away and stuff your text full of keywords that are oddly placed as this is very irritating when a user is trying to look for helpful, relevant content. The importance of keywords cannot be underestimated.
